The Adut Kiir Scholarship Program: A Step Towards Educational Equity and Empowerment
The Adut Salva Kiir (ASK) Foundation's national scholarship program is a significant step towards promoting educational equity and empowering vulnerable students across South Sudan. This initiative, launched by Adut Salva Kiir, the daughter of President Salva Kiir and Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, aims to provide scholarships to students from every state and administrative area, with a particular focus on orphans, disadvantaged children, and children of veterans.
The program's first phase has already made a positive impact, with 38 students from Lakes State selected to join peers from other states at Cornerstone Vision Academy in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. The selection process, conducted by the Lakes State selection committee, involved visiting all eight counties to identify eligible students who completed primary school in 2023, 2024, or 2025 and met one of the three categories: orphans, disadvantaged children, or children of veterans.
The beneficiaries, including 5 males from Yirol West, 4 males from Rumbek North, and 3 females from Wulu County, will have the opportunity to study at Cornerstone Vision Academy, where they will join peers from other states. This not only provides them with access to quality education but also fosters a sense of community and support among students from diverse backgrounds.
One of the scholarship recipients, Nyanwulu Moses, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, "I would like to thank Adut Kiir Mayardit for giving us this chance to study in Aweil. We will study, succeed, and return to our parents."
The program's focus on increasing female representation in the second phase is particularly commendable. By targeting children who are disadvantaged or children of veterans, the ASK Foundation is not only providing educational opportunities but also empowering vulnerable communities and promoting social mobility.
The support from the Lakes State government and the ASK Foundation is crucial in ensuring the success of the program. Nelson Makoi Makur, Lakes State minister of general education, praised the ASK Foundation for supporting vulnerable students, stating, "These learners are children from vulnerable families. Some are orphans; others have special needs. They deserve this support."
The program's impact extends beyond the individual students. Gen. Madhang Majok Meen, governor of Lakes State, emphasized the importance of the program in shaping the future of the state, stating, "These children are the future of Lakes State. We are confident they will excel in their studies and return knowledge that will benefit their communities."
